Course Description
Whichever way you look at it, the management of people within an organization is fundamental to how well it will perform. Great organizations have great managers, and this workshop is designed to show participants what that involves - as well as allowing them to transfer techniques into their real-life situations.

Course Content
- What makes a good first-line manager? By using group discussion we focus on the skills and qualities required of a line manager
- The psychological contract. Often overlooked in an organization, we will identify the importance of employee expectations
- Every organization needs effective recruitment and induction processes. We will discuss the importance of recruitment and the recruitment decisions that we make and how induction is a key part of the welcome any employee should receive into a new job.
- By using activities the nature teamwork and group life cycles will be explored.
- An effective team will depend upon its members exchanging ideas and being involved in the life and decisions of the team. Here, we will look at how individual needs may vary within the team and how we can get the team to do the job.
- The role of the team leader. Through discussion and group exercises we will examine the responsibilities of the team leader
- Every organization will have its specific processes for managing performance. In this session, we will focus on how to manage performance, rather than the processes.
- Giving and receiving feedback. It's fine to give feedback out but as a manager, you need to be prepared to take it back. This session will focus on how to give constructive rather than destructive feedback
- Managing people doesn't always run smoothly. Using case studies we will identify ways to deal with problem behavior
- Setting SMART objectives. There's no point in setting objectives unless you can measure them. We will define what a SMART objective is and work through some examples
- By using coaching as a means of developing your staff you can enable your team to learn from mistakes and use them as development opportunities. Here we will describe coaching, identify coaching and some of the skills needed to coach effectively
- Reflecting on the learning and action planning for the future
